Confirmation of the subscription

When the subscriber enters his address to our database, or when the address of the existing subscription changes, or if the term of locking due to delivery errors or "Locked by subscriber" has expired we send you the message asking you to confirm your subscription.

If you haven't received the message asking you to confirm your subscription, you can order a copy of this message using item "Enter -> Subscription status" or command INFO, if you manage your subscription via e-mail.

To confirm your subscription it is enough to use the link specified in the confirmation request message or common item

"Enter -> Confirmation of the subscription"

You will receive the "Subscription status" reply message formatted as you have specified when subscribing. This will mean, that your subscription has been confirmed successfully.

If you won't confirm your subscription till the date specified, it will be deleted automatically. Consequently, if someone has subscribed you without your consent, you may simply ignore the confirmation request message.

Don't be afraid. You will only need to confirm you subscription once - when you decide to subscribe. All subsequent changes for existing subscription do not require confirmation.

Notice that you can modify unconfirmed subscription, but you will start receiving the letters only after you confirm your subscription.

When managing your subscription via e-mail (for example, if you have no access to web) you may use alternative method - write a letter to the following address

confirm@Felist.Com

Contents of the confirmation letter may be arbitrary, it won't be analyzed. What really does matter is the Subj: field of the confirmation message, which must contain the text from the Subj: field of the source message without changes because your message will be processed using this data. Carefully check the Subject: field of the confirmation message, because some mail clients are inclined not to copy the whole content of this field !

Example:
The subscriber has subscribed the address user@host, and has received at this address the confirmation message, that contains the following text in its Subject: field:

Confirm user@host magicword
This means, that to confirm subscription for the address user@host, this subscriber needs to send the message to confirm@Felist.Com , where the Subject: field contains the following:

RE: Confirm user@host magicword
Warning: Specific values for user@host and magicword can be defined from the message asking you to confirm your subscription.

If after sending confirmation message you receive another confirmation request message, this means that the address for confirming subscription was recognized, but the Subject: field could not be recognized completely. Check your letter carefully and try again.

If you do not get any reply during an hour or so (if you are connected using slow lines, this time interval may increase), this means that the robot haven't managed to recognize from the contents of the Subject: field even the address to be confirmed (to which it send the reply). Check your letter carefully and try again.

How to set subscription format for each list separately [ NEW ! ] 07/VIII 2001

Format, in which you subscribe to the list, is defined by common format, which you have chosen for you subscription. Common format you can change through Enter -> Format when managing subscription through web and by command FORMAT when managing via e-mail.

In future you can change format of any list at any moment.

When managing subscription through web, you should:

  1. Subscribe to the list, if you haven't done it yet
  2. Go to the item "To what are you subscribed" in "Editing subscription"
  3. Choose needed formats for the lists you are subscribed to in the window in front of the name of each list:
    • Choose html, if you want to receive the list in HTML-format
    • Choose text, if you want to receive the list in textual format

When managing subscription via e-mail, specify the format you need at once (when subscribing to the list). Or change it later, using command SUBSCRIBE and specifying format.

How to suspend my subscription ?

If you do not need your subscription for some time (for example, you are going to have vacation), you can simply suspend your subscription using "Enter -> Locks" or using subscription modification commands when managing your subscription via e-mail.

If the subscription won't be unlocked within 16 weeks, it will be changed to the status "Confirmation required". In this case the subscriber will receive the confirmation request message.

Why can subscription be locked

If our server receives undelivery reports from your mail system for three days hand-running, your subscription will be locked automatically.

To check your subscription status and unlock your subscription go to "Editing subscription". If your subscription is locked, you will be warned. To unlock the subscription use item "Locking".

If you do not unlock the subscription within 10 days, it will be changed to the status "Confirmation required". In this case, a confirmation request message will be sent to the subscriber.

Besides locking due to delivery errors there is the so-called administrative lock. We use it, if in response to delivery we receive from your address automatic replies that inform about your absence in the office, delivery reports, read notifications and other messages that must not be sent to our address by itself. First, it hampers us in our work, and, second, it indicates that your mail system (or that of your provider) is configured incorrectly.

We do not send notifications on administrative lock - we behave just as you do in respect to us. For administrative lock to be deleted, send us the message, explaining the reasons, because of which you wanted to turn our address into wastebasket by filling it with trash.

Why can the subscription be deleted

The subscription will be deleted, if we receive notification from your mail system, informing us that the address you have specified is unknown to it.

The subscription will also be deleted, if you do not confirm it within the time period specified.

The subscription locked due to delivery errors may be deleted after its changing to the status "Confirmation required".

The subscription suspended by subscriber may be deleted after its changing to the status "Confirmation required".

You get the letter with attachment [ 05/12/2000 ]

Yes, the letters of our lists from time to time may include the attached file(s). But, please, notice

  • We never ask to open these files
  • We never ask to execute these files
  • We never ask to send these files to anybody
  • We never ask to do anything with these files at all

If the letter with attachment is "from our service" and there is an instruction to do anything with it in it - this is not our letter.

We will be very glad, if you will send us such a letter, if you'll get it, to the address support@felist.com

I ceased to receive messages

The typical reasons:

I receive several copies of the same message

The practice has shown that you may receive several copies of the same message due to the following reasons. They are listed below (sorted by frequency, in descending order):

  1. Errors on your POP-server (if you receive your mail in Windows). Here is an example message from one of our subscribers:
    Date: Thu, 14 May 1998 01:40:07 +0300
    From: Dima Badisov
    To: hac@Felist.Com

    Hello Hac,

Because FAQ does not explain this, I would like to
describe some of the reasons, due to which I received
several copies of the same message. This, of course, may
or may not be well-known facts, but I hope it will help.

If some organization asks its provider to forward its
domain to POP-mailbox, everything is OK (mail server
correctly sends mail to the users) until two or more users
within that domain join the same list, and NEWSLETTER
i.e., the message that has no recipient in the message body).
I do not know, whether or not this is the inherent feature of
routing the "domain" to POP-mailbox or simply most providers
use the same soft, but the _first_ recipient in the address
list gets the "received for" field, while other recipients don't.
Thus, if more then one user joins the same list,
all messages except for the first are received by admin
with the comment "recipient missing", or even without comments,
which mainly depends on the mail server. I also did receive such
messages and was very much surprised :).

    Best regards,
     Dima mailto:badiso@mail.admiral.ru

  2. Some combinations of the mail clients and POP-servers manage even to receive the newsletter without deleting it from the mailbox. Next time you will get this message again. Connect you postmaster.

  3. Some mail servers have problems when interacting with each other. Carefully check the system header of "original" and "copy" messages (most mail clients do not display complete contents of the system header, and you will need to configure the program in such a way as to view the whole system header).

Here is an example of analysis of the "exercise" system header:
    Return-Path: gluck@felist.ru
    Received: from ccc.ddd.ru by eee.fff.ru with ESMTP id AAA01234;
     Fri, 3 Dec 1999 05:25:09 +0300 (MSD)
    Received: from aaa.bbb.ru by ccc.ddd.ru with ESMTP id QQQ34577;
     Fri, 3 Dec 1999 05:24:56 +0300 (MSD)
    Received: from justcat.felist.ru by aaa.bbb.ru with ESMTP id FAA22576;
     Fri, 3 Dec 1999 05:22:57 +0300 (MSD)
    X-Felis-Deliver-Id: AB3E09E3E; Fri, 3 Dec 1999 05:10:14 +0300 (MSK)
    X-Felis-Queue-Id: Fri, 3 Dec 1999 05:10:10 +0300 (MSK)
    Message-Id: <19991203051541_Hk_6500.19991112120000.felist_@fin.wstan.dailynotes>
    Date: Fri, 3 Dec 1999 05:15:39 +0300 (MSK)
    Precedence: special-delivery
Comments: Felist.Com Mailing List Service. http://Felist.Com/
    From: Felist.Com
    Subject: Last Wall-Street News
    To: "fin.wstan.dailynotes"
    MIME-Version: 1.0
    Content-Type: text/html; charset=us-ascii
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit

If the two "similar" messages differ only by the Message-Id: field, then this is the case described in paragraph 5.

Otherwise, compare the values of the field starting with X-Felis-Queue-Id:. If these values are different, then it is our task to solve the problem. Contact us and send us both message headers.

If this is not the case, compare the values of the field starting with X-Felis-Deliver-Id:. If these values are different, then the problem is due to the unstable connection with your mail server. Mail transfer protocol is implemented in such a way, that when data transfer is interrupted, the receiving server considers the message as received, The sender, which has not received confirmation, considers the message as "not sent" and starts sending it anew.

If these fields have the same value, then view the Received: fields to find the string, where the numbers that follow id do not match. Suppose, this is the string that starts with Received: from aaa.bbb.com by ccc.ddd.com This means, that the server aaa.bbb.com has for some reason (for example, the one described above) repeatedly sent the message to ccc.ddd.com.
If the real name aaa.bbb.com ends be Felist.Com or Subscribe.Ru, then it is a problem of unstable connection with your mail server, in the other case to eliminate the problem, you need to contact postmaster@aaa.bbb.com

  4. If you have subscribed several addresses - it is up to you to eliminate the problem ;-)

  5. The author has sent the same message more then once. This case is easy to identify, because the messages with identical content will have different values of the Message-Id: field.

If none of the above described matches your case, then contact us. DO NOT FORGET TO SEND COMPLETE HEADERS OF THE "ORIGINAL" AND "COPY".

Messages are delivered with significant delay

This depends on your luck. To support the respond time of our server at the satisfactory level we have selected the following approach. Messages are not sent individually to each subscriber. Rather, they are grouped in "packs", each or which contains 50 messages. Each "pack" is delivered by individual process. Because of this, you may be simply unlucky, especially if you are 50-th in the queue, and most other subscribers in a group have slow connection.

Sometimes I do not receive some messages

Delivery method described in the previous answer has just another limitation, which allows to avoid performance problems. Each delivery of the list can last no more then 24 hours. The messages that remain undelivered during this interval, are deleted automatically.

It is also possible that your case is described in the answer to the question "What's wrong with the corporate POP-mailbox".

Furthermore it is necessary to remember (it is especially important for users of free mailboxes) that sometimes your box is limited on the sizes. Then it becomes overfilled where can the letters of the lists get to? You are right! Exactly into that place, about what you have thought. What is more interesting - even our answers to your complaints about absence of the letters, frequently come back for the same reason. The conclusion - mailbox should be purged regularly.

I do not receive anything at all

Typical reasons:

I cannot read messages with BASE64 encoding
or
I cannot read messages with quoted-printable encoding

When delivering messages to certain subscribers, the messages are automatically converted to base64 or quoted-printable encoding. This fact is indicated by a string similar to (for base64):

        X-MIME-Autoconverted: from 8bit to base64 by cellar.felist.com

in the message header. The message itself consists from the strings like :

        zSDzzNXWwtkg8sHT09nMy8kNCtPF0tfF0sEg58/Sz8TTy8/KIOvP1C4NCg0KLS0tLS0tLS0t

or (for quoted-printable):

        X-MIME-Autoconverted: from 8bit to quoted-printable by cellar.felist.com

in the message header. The message itself consists from the strings like :

        =E1=CE=C7=CC=C9=CA=D3=CB=C9=C5 =CB=D2=CF=CC=C9=CB=C9

This is caused by the fact, that in the course of delivery, my mail server receives from your mail server the warning message informing that it cannot receive the text (8bit). Because of this, my mail server has to encode the text in such a way, as to allow your server receive the message (7bit).

These problems are caused by the settings of Your mail server, and I strongly recommend you to contact Your provider and/or administrator. I cannot do their job for them !

I haven't subscribed, but I receive your messages
or
I've subscribed, but get messages of the lists I haven't subscribed to

If you receive the messages that you did not subscribe, check the following variants:

  1. You have subscribed more than one of your addresses
  2. You are subscribed by some "well-wisher"
  3. Combination of POP and SMTP servers in your company works with messages that do not contain real recipient in the To: field incorrectly
  4. Your company uses corporate POP-mailbox

The last item may produce the most interesting effect - all recipients in your company start receiving all messages, subscribed by more than one person.

If your case is different from all situations described above, contact us AND DO NOT FORGET TO ATTACH FULL HEADERS OF THE "PROBLEMATIC" MESSAGE.

The Subj: field contains rubbish

The Subj field for letters of our lists is formatted according to Network Standard (RFC). If it contains 8-bit symbols it may look something like:

   Subject: =?koi8-r?q?=F3=CF=D3=D4=CF=D1=CE=C9=C5?=

This should be correctly interpreted by all mail programs that can work with MIME messages.

I want to subscribe PDA under Palm OS

If you want to subscribe PDA under Palm OS, then set appropriate parameter of subscription then subscribing, or replace it for the necessary one later using "Subscription options" or command OPTION+ then managing subscription via e-mail.

Confirmation request message and subscription status messages you will receive as ordinary letters. The issues of the lists you will receive in format Doc.

Now the subscription format Text is automatically set.

We recommend to visit Palm.Subscribe.Ru - here you will find Archive of the lists with the possibility to get the issues in format Doc and some useful information about Palm OS.

What is "Pilot subscription" ?

In each section of the List Catalogue there is a list, named "Pilot subscription to the lists of the section". This is an opportunity to receive first three issues of each new list of the appropriate catalogue section and all its subsections automatically.

Reading them you can decide, whether the given list is interesting to you or not and, if want, to subscribe directly from the letter.

From the fourth issue on you won't receive pilot issues of this list any more.

For simplification of sorting of the letters all pilot issues have in the beginning of the field Subject: a prefix 'Pilot:', the list-id any pilot list begins with probe.

The lists 'For everyone' have no pilot issues.

Be attentive subscribing to the lists of this kind. If you subscribe to the list of some section and one or several its subsections simultaneously, you will receive some letters containing the same information!

What is "Invitation to subscribe" ?

Each list master has an opportunity to add to its list the addresses, which he would like to see among his subscribers. How to do it, on the one hand, having informed the potential subscribers about it and on another - not allowing to compel subscription ? For this purpose we have introduced a concept "Invitation to subscribing".

If your address is added by list master to the list of those people, whom he wants to be his subscribers, and you aren't the subscriber of Felist.Com yet, you receive standard message with the request to confirm subscription. Having confirmed subscription, you accept the invitation of the list master.

If you are already our subscriber and you aren't subscribed to the list, which master invites you, you receive the letter "Subscription status" with the description of this list and address of the page where it is possible to get to know examples of its issues. To accept the invitations subscribe to inviting list as usual. Besides, to simplify acceptance of invitation, in "Managing subscription" the special item containing enumeration of the lists, which masters have invited you. If you do not have any invitation, this item will be automatically hidden.

If you do not want to accept invitation, simply ignore it and it will be automatically deleted within a week.

If you do not want to receive the invitations from anybody from the list masters at all, take advantage of section "Subscription options" and mark item "not to accept invitations to subscribe" or use command OPTION if you manage subscription via e-mail.

If list master bothers you with his invitations, please contact us, having attached a copy of the letter with the invitation.

How to read text in Russian

If you want to read Russian text (our russian lists for example) and your software doesn't allow it, then try to use advices from the site KOI8-R - Russian Net Character Set

I want to subscribe pager/phone

If you want to subscribe a pager or phone, then set appropriate parameter of subscription using "Subscription options" at once or replace it for the necessary one later.

We provide subscription for devices of following kinds:

Phone
Phone with its personal e-mail address

Pager
Pager with its personal e-mail address

Pager-MS
Pager with its personal e-mail address requiring placing the message in the field Subject: of the letter, rather then in its usual place.

Pager-RS
Pager with corporate e-mail address, which is handled by operator, the message to which should have a number recipient's pager in the field Subject: of the letter. Subscribing pager of this kind you should specify the address of subscription as follows:
PagerNumber%AddressOfCommunicationOperator

For example, for pager number 1234 with operator's address adres@operatora.zz it will look like 1234%adres@operatora.zz

Pager-RSB
This variant is similar to pager-rs, the only difference is that this kind of pagers has large memory and is able to receive big messages. You will receiv one message of 1024 symbols instead of five of 150 symbols. We recommend to try Pager-RS first.

If your device isn't mentioned above - contact us and we will try to solve the problem of subscription to it.

Such subscription has the following features:

  1. You should subscribe the address, getting on which the letters will be automatically transmitted to your device. Such "attached" address is usually given as "tie-in" at connection or after the first requirement to the operator of a network.

  2. Making such subscription you agree with our sending to you 1-3 advertising messages per day (in working hours by Moscow time). Alas, the service free for you requires of us some expenses, which it is necessary to compensate. But at the same time you escape the usual advertising in the letters ;)

  3. The Subscription status message is sent in the very much pared-down form - only address, password, format and probable reminders about locks.

  4. Try another, if you want to, but on the basis of researches we earnestly recommend the format TEXT.

  5. You will get only the first 5 portions of the issue containing approximately 150 symbols, or one containing 1024 symbols, if Pager-RSB is used. However, we remove advertising and standard beginning and ending of the letter and all spaces and series of repeated symbols will be compressed to one.

  6. Each of these portions has number in the field From:, the first one contains also the list-id of the list sent to you.

  7. Alas, because of some reasons, not depending on us, you may get these portions in arbitrary order.

  8. The lists are sent out on working days from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. by Moscow time. The lists issued not in the intervals specified are delayed and sent the next day.

  9. This service is intended basically for reception of informational lists. If you would like to read "poem" on your phone, set a type of subscription "E-mail" and read the long messages in parts - many phone operators have special SMS-commands for reading large letters in such a way.
In case of change and addition in conditions of service the information about it will be published on Felist.Com and in the list "News of Felist.Com project".

What is the subscription "on working days only" ?

If for some reason you cannot receive the letters of the lists on days off, take advantage of a setting "Subscription on working days". It is accessible through "Subscription options" or command OPTION when managing subscription by e-mail.

If you set this parameter, your subscription won't be taken into account at sending of the lists issued from 15:00 on Friday till 03:00 on Monday.

In this period the delivery of only those lists is possible, which were issued on Friday before 15:00. They can still be standing in line for sending.

If you have subscribed using the "Quick subscription"

If you subscribed to one of our lists using "Fast subscription" (i.e. via form on the other server) and you are one of our subscribers yet, the following will happen.

  1. You will be automatically subscribed to this list.
  2. There will be set the same format of messages as you subscription already has.

If you were not our subscriber, then:

  1. You will be added to our subscriber database
  2. The password will be generated for you. This password will be specified in the message requesting you to confirm your subscription. We recommend you to change this password.
  3. You will be automatically subscribed to the selected list.
  4. You will set format yourself, if the form for subscription allows it, or it will be set by list master. Generally it will be "Text" You always may change it, if you want to.

Do not forget to reply the confirmation request message to confirm your subscription.

Later you can change your subscription at Mailing List Service via "Enter" -> "Subscription" or by the commands for editing subscription when managing subscription via e-mail.

What format to choose ?

We have made short descriptions for mail clients listed below:
(This list lacks your favorite program ? Make similar description and send us)

For web-based e-mail Services:
chat.ru, mailru.com, newmail.ru, zmail.ru, mail.ru,pochtalion.ru,iname.ru hotmail.com, yahoo.com, usa.net, iname.com
any format (HTML is always recommended)

How to sort messages ?

Most mail clients can automatically direct incoming messages to several folders using the rules specified by the user. Messages from Felist.Com contain special attributes intended to simplify this task:

All messages contain in the header the following field

Comments: Felist.Com Mailing List Service. http://Felist.Com/

All messages contain in the header the following field

        From: Felist.Com <namma@Felist.Com>

All messages contain in the header the following field

        To: news.felist <null@Felist.Com>

where the words news.felist are the list-id (in this case that is "News of Felist.Com project"), the issue of which the received letter is. Each list has its own code. You may see it in List Catalogue.

We have made short descriptions for mail clients listed below:
(This list lacks your favorite program ? Make similar description and send us)

When I read a message, my computer tries to connect to the Internet

If you have selected HTML format, and your computer attempts to establish Internet connection all by itself, this is due to the "Autoload Images" in the software used for viewing HTML messages. For example, you are not surprised, if your browser loads both the page and its images. This is the same case - HTML message is normal Web page that you have received by mail.

If you did NOT select HTML format for your subscription - scan for viruses.

Corporate subscription

The phrase "Many employees in my organization have been subscribed to your lists, and this overloads our network with increased traffic" is not the reason for corporate subscription.

The technology of sending lists already contains traffic optimization. Your mail server will receive one message with the address-list, rather then many copies of the message addressed to each recipient personally.

What is wrong with the corporate POP-mailbox

If you never receive subscribed messages or if you received some, but subsequently the messages fail to be delivered, then one of the most frequent reason is that your organization uses the corporate POP-mailbox.

Corporate POP-mailbox is normal personal POP-mailbox, used as a corporate one. Generally this is explained by "convenience and simplicity" (the argument of the postmaster) or "convenience of delivery" (provider's argument). Negative consequences of collective usage of the thing that was developed for individual usage, are not noticeable in most cases. However, if the incoming message is not formatted as usual - mail will be lost immediately.

Why ? It is simple. Mail delivery protocol transfers information on the recipients in mail transfer commands rather than in the message itself. True message recipient need not be mentioned in the To: or CC: fields or even in the Received: field reserved for internal usage. Mail transfer systems, that are fully compliant to the network standards, will be working perfectly. Thus, information on the recipients is lost when using the corporate POP mailbox.

What happens if the message with a list of recipients arrives to the corporate POP-mailbox ? This depends on the message structure. If the true recipient is specified in the message header - you are lucky. If recipient address is specified in the Bcc: field, everything depends on the settings of intermediate mail servers. Pray, and, perhaps you will receive the message.

To summarize, the corporate mailbox is the Good Thing, when you do not want to bother with the settings of the mail server. In more complicated situations you will lose your mail.

The lists are typical example. Recipients are specified in mail transfer commands rather than in the message (it decreases the traffic and allows some privacy, this way we do not show the list of subscribers). As a result if only one person in the whole organization has subscribed to some list, - everything is OK (depending on the settings of mail gateways).

If someone else subscribes to the list, then both of you won't receive subscribed messages, because the message has no recipient address. The message will be delivered to the corporate mailbox (because at this stage recipients are known), but there it will be lost, because the provider does not notice that recipients are not specified explicitly and simply lost the recipient list.

What can be done ? Do not be lazy and support normal mail system.

Comment for administrators. The presence of recipient address in the Received: field on intermediate relays and target server depends on their individual settings. For example, default settings of sendmail imply, that the recipient is specified in the Received: field, if there is only one recipient (i.e. there is only one RCPT command in the course of transferring this message). SMTP servers that deliver mail to the corporate mailboxes must solve this problem themselves, because the recipient list is lost precisely at the moment when the message arrives to the corporate mailbox, rather then on the intermediate servers.

Why the To: field looks like this ?

The To: field contains the list code rather than real recipient. This can be used for sorting the messages. We did it, because the messages are not sent individually to each subscriber.

It will never be changed. Individual delivery to each recipient is slow and generates intensive traffic. Besides, the method we use is faster and generates less traffic.

Furthermore, when transferring mail using SMTP, the To:, Cc: and Bcc: fields are not analyzed at all - mail servers specify recipients using RCPT commands of SMTP protocol. If your server works with SMTP incorrectly, go to your system administrator with your complaints.

Typical example of incorrect reception of mail is a corporate POP-mailbox

HTML message does not contain pictures

Just imagine the message size in this case ?!

We assume that you have enabled the autoloading images option. The letters include absolute link to the pictures.

Subscription status message is not HTML-formatted

Even if you selected HTML format, subscription status messages will be in the MIME format. This is easier for us.

Merging other lists

If other site that has its own list, decides to transfer to us its distribution and support of subscriber database, then for every address from list of subscribers the following events take place:

You are not one of our subscribers
You will be added to our subscriber database.
We set you a password (some random number).
We set you the same format as you have for this list earlier.
You will be subscribed to the transferred list automatically.
The subscription status message with password is sent to you

You are one of our subscribers, but are not subscribed to this list
New list will be added to your subscription automatically.

You are our subscriber and are already subscribed to this list
Nothing happens. You have done everything yourself.

Extra spaces in the Subject field

In the Text and HTML messages extra spaces may appear in the Subject: field. This is caused by errors of handling MIME-encoded Subject: field by mail client.

We have performed some corrective actions to mask this effect. Most probably, you won't notice it at all.

Currently, this bug is found in the following programs:

  • The BAT ! - I have written them and the developers promised to correct it

  • Microsoft Outlook Express - They are not the ones whom I would write, because it is useless. If you wish to take the trouble communicating with them - contact me, I will send you detailed description of the problem.
